The Winter Thrillers™ series of Lenten Rose are easy and colourful spring bloomers for the shade garden. Plants produce bushy mounds of thick, leathery evergreen leaves. Flower stalks appear in early spring, bearing showy, large, cup-shaped blooms. ‘Green Gambler’ has single blooms of crisp apple green with some petals veined or spotted in burgundy.
‘Midnight Ruffles’ has double black flowers with yellow stamens and was featured on Martha Stewart in March 2012. The leaves emerge a rich mahogany shade in spring before maturing to dark green. Plants resent being disturbed. Trim the old leaves to the ground in late winter before the buds emerge, to allow the flowers maximum impact. Lenten Rose was selected as the 2005 Perennial Plant of the Year.
